THE TOTALC CHECKLIST FOR EVALUATING WEBSITES:

B-SeenOnTop uses a proprietary checklist called the TotalC Checklist For Evaluating Websites
Excel (41KB).  Our checklist gauges your website's overall health and search engine friendliness.
We can tell you what's broken, and how to fix it.

TotalC is an acronym that stands for Technology, Ownership, Traffic, Age, Links and Content:

  • By reviewing a site's Technology we can determine what, if anything, is getting in the way
of a  search engine's ability to index it.  Sometimes something in the site design will
impede a search engine's ability to crawl / spider & index the site.  This would be
considered a show-stopper for search engine optimization.  We would want to know that
up front, and to share with you what design changes need to take place in order for search
engine optimization to have any positive benefits for your site.

  • By verifying a URL's Ownership we can determine the risk of future loss and/or failure.  If
you are not a registered owner of the site, how can you be in a position to renew the
domain registration when it next expires?

  • An existing website's Traffic is an indication of how easy or difficult it is to find, it's visibility
and popularity.  A site has to be visible, have many links pointing to it in the major search
engines and have those same links frequently clicked upon in order to have a good web
    site traffic ranking.

  • A well-Aged website will always rank higher than a newer one.  Generally you should
target to have a web site in the area of 10 years old and have a site registration expiration
target of at least 2 years.

  • Websites with a large number of highly relevant, varied and respected / authoritative
incoming Links will rank higher than others. The quality of incoming links is much more
important than the quantity of incoming links.  Irrelevant incoming links are worthless.

  • Websites with sought-after, original, fresh and inspiring Content will naturally draw the
most traffic and back links to your site. This is generally considered the most important of
considerations when evaluating the health of an existing website.  In the world of SEO,
    "content is king".

Here is a link to the
TOTALC Checklist For Evaluating Websites Excel (41KB).  It is an Excel
spreadsheet with two tabs.

The first tab contains roughly 120 questions which should be considered when evaluating an
existing website.  All questions need not, or maybe cannot be answered.  The goal is to be able to
answer enough to get a feel for the health of each of the criteria above, and to summarize
observations and findings in the second or summary tab of the spreadsheet.  Between the Q&A
columns, is a hidden column that offers a link to one of many free tools that can be used to make
the assessment.  Don't miss out on that.  Many do.

The second tab has broad criteria (for example, content and traffic) and room to offer a summary
impression of what you have observed going thru the first tab of the spreadsheet.  Again this is
not intended to be a scientific assessment of the site.  It should however, help you to identify any
show-stoppers or risks to project success prior to either you or B-SeenOnTop agreeing to a
contract for professional services.  We'll do the home work and share it with you.  Then we can
both make an informed decision.

Lastly, SEO is an art and not a science.  The purpose of the spreadsheet is to simply, hopefully,
guide both of us in making the right decision.
