Your goal is to design and build a search engine friendly web page / web site that ranks well with
the top ten search engines in the United States. You must start by first understanding about
search engines. Search engines are the means by which we find things on the world wide web
(www). The goal of top ranked search engines is to interpret your search engine query as
accurately as possible, and to then serve up the best possible results. Your goal is to get as
much satisfied, enthusiastic traffic, referrals and sales as you can from your web site. Our goal is
to make that happen, as inexpensively. painlessly and profitably as possible. This is where
business owners and search engine optimization companies converge.
There are thousands of search engines. Many only search and index a small subset of the web.
Most don’t build their own index of web sites but instead rely on others to provide it to them.
Google, for example, feeds (Time Warner) AOL, Netscape and Earthlink. According to June 2010
search engine rankings data released by Hitwise, 98.06% of searches in the US are conducted
on the following top four self-indexed search engines. It is safe to ignore all others.
- Google -- 71.54%
- Yahoo -- 14.37%
- Bing -- 9.85%
- Ask -- 2.19%
Rounding out the top ten search engines in the United States in 2010 are:
- AOL (powered by Google)
- Alta Vista (powered by Yahoo)
- Gigablast (real time spidering)
- Netscape (powered by Google)
- Snap.com (portions powered by: Gigablast, Smarter.com, SimplyHired.com, X1
Technologies, Inc. and enhanced by Ask.com).
Search Engines find web sites when spidering the web or by having the web site submitted to
them. The later is no longer considered a best practice. Spiders are computer programs used to
methodically step through all the links on the web and create copies of the pages found. Search
engines build huge database indices containing all of the text (keywords and keyword phrases)
found on individual web pages. Ranking algorithms sort and rank the index entries taking into
consideration the keywords, their context, frequency, density, prominence, and the age and
popularity of a website. Popularity refers to the traffic a website receives as well as the number
and quality of incoming links.

Search engines are guilty of having some pet peeves. These practices should be avoided or
eliminated altogether in order to rank well in search engine results. These techniques are
considered unethical or "black hat" in the search engine optimization world.
- frames, flash and audio
- multimedia.
- over optimization and repetitive content
- affiliate only advertising
- stacking or stuffing keywords
- a non-permanent redirect to another site
- copying / plagiarizing
- foul, hateful, offensive or racist language
- hidden content (for example, white text on white background)
- an exact copy of another (mirrored) site and cross-linking pages back and forth
- a site with “Coming Soon” or “Under Construction” pages
- sites with broken links
Wikipedia has excellent articles explaining in detail each of these practices, should you need
more information. Also feel free to Contact us if we can be of any assistance in helping you
